They form when two tectonic plates collide and one gets pushed under another.
There are two types of convergent plates, subducting and mountain building.
Some surface features are volcanoes, mountain ranges and trenches, and earthquakes are present.
- Subduction causes the continents to fold, causing mountains ranges, such as the Himalayas.
- Volcanoes are caused by the melted oceanic crust burning a path upwards, erupting violently.
- Trenches are found where the ocean crust is sinking below the continental crust
- Earthquakes are caused by the jerky action of a plate scraping underneath another, and may cause tsunamis
Living near convergent boundaries may be dangerous:
Each year, more than thousands of people are killed by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Occasionally, big eruptions or earthquakes kill large numbers of people. In 1883 an eruption of Krakatau volcano in Indonesia killed 37,000 people. In 1983 an eruption-caused mudslide on Nevada del Ruiz in Columbia killed 25,000 people. In 1976, an earthquake in Tangshan, China killed an astounding 750,000 people.
